The danger of the cold
Keeping all the ends warm
The right clothing
Equipment manufacturers are increasingly offering clothing against the cold. Generally speaking, it's better to cut down on layers of sweaters knitted by your grandmother, in favour of fewer layers : a neoprene undershirt, polar vest and well-designed jacket will be much more efficient.
Although it's easy to keep the body warm, the cold always starts to creep in via the extremities: balaclava and scarf, gloves, boots.
Your arms and legs stiff with the cold will no longer react when you need to use the controls!
And on the machine
Riding in very cold conditions requires special attention.
The tyres do not warm up, and so their grip is limited and curves will need to be taken smoothly.
The engine sometimes has difficulty in reaching its proper running temperature, and may therefore tend to hesitate at low revs, even if the increasing use of injection systems reduces these phenomena.
If numbness starts to set in (fingers, hands, feet), and gripping the controls is increasingly difficult and you have almost no feeling in the hands, then the cold is gradually being converted into frost-bite...
