Riding two up

Sharing the pleasure
Nightmare or osmosis, it all depends

The age of the passenger

A child of under five years of age can be carried, on condition he or she is in a special seat fixed to the motorcycle.
However, although the French Highway Code authorises this, it is not recommended to carry children of under twelve years of age on a motorcycle; it is, in fact, difficult to find helmets of the right size, as well as suitable protective clothing.

Their physique is more suitable as from this age. There is no age restriction on side-cars, but all passengers must wear a helmet. Mopeds are different: the passenger must be at least 14 years old, like the driver.

The equipment

The first, fundamental aspect: the passenger is subjected to the same elements as the driver, and also takes the same risks.
He must therefore be equipped in the same way. His passive role is in no way a "second driver" with just a cheap helmet and rain gear.
For his comfort and safety, and also for his well-being on the bike, the passenger must wear clothing up to the same standard as that of the driver.

The passenger's position

In theory, the passenger must lean against the driver, but not too much. The motorcycle is driven using subtle movements of the whole body and if the driver is too restricted, like a wearing a back-pack, his driving will be hindered.

At the same time, to avoid the driver being subjected to too much turbulence, the passenger should position his head a little to one side, and not stay strictly behind the driver's head, which also blocks the passenger's view and prevents him from enjoying the countryside

Taking care of the passenger

It goes without saying that you drive more smoothly when there are two of you on the machine.
Firstly because ground clearance, braking and suspension reaction is not the same as when you are alone; then because an over-aggressive and choppy driving style can put the passenger off the pleasures of the motorcycle.

Do not forget to check that your insurance specifically covers carrying a passenger.
